Summer in New Zealand means long days outdoors, salty sea breezes, and plenty of sunshine. But while we enjoy the warm weather, our lips often take the hit. Sun exposure, wind, and dry air can quickly leave them chapped and rough. The good news? With a few simple habits, you can keep your lips soft, smooth, and healthy all season long. Here’s how to give them the care they deserve – from sun protection to hydration and natural glow.

Why your lips need extra care

Unlike the rest of your skin, your lips don’t have oil glands. That means they can’t produce their own protective barrier to lock in moisture. When the air is warm and the UV index is high, moisture evaporates faster, leaving lips dry and vulnerable.

That’s why daily care is essential – not just in winter, but also during the sunny New Zealand summer, when UV rays are strong and the air can be surprisingly dry, especially in coastal or alpine areas.

Sun protection – your number one summer rule

Most of us remember sunscreen for our face and body, but forget our lips. Big mistake – lips can get sunburned too. Always use a lip balm with SPF 15 or higher when you’re outdoors. It protects against both dryness and sun damage.

  • Choose a broad-spectrum SPF to guard against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Reapply often, especially after swimming, eating, or wiping your mouth.
  • Avoid menthol or strong fragrances, which can irritate or dry out lips in the sun.

A good SPF lip balm is your best companion at the beach, on a hike, or while enjoying a summer barbecue.

Gentle exfoliation – but not too often

A mild exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and keeps lips smooth. You can use a ready-made lip scrub or make your own with a little sugar and honey. Gently massage in circular motions for 20–30 seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water.

Do this no more than once a week – over-exfoliating can make lips more sensitive and prone to irritation.

Hydration and nourishment – the key to softness

After exfoliating, it’s time to replenish moisture. Look for a lip balm with natural, nourishing ingredients such as:

  • Shea butter – softens and protects.
  • Beeswax – forms a natural barrier against wind and weather.
  • Jojoba or coconut oil – hydrates and adds shine without feeling greasy.
  • Vitamin E – helps repair and strengthen delicate skin.

Apply balm several times a day, especially after meals and before bed. At night, use a thicker layer as a lip mask so your lips can recover while you sleep.

Common mistakes to avoid

Even small habits can make a big difference. Here are a few things to watch out for:

  • Licking your lips – saliva evaporates quickly and leaves them even drier.
  • Using matte or long-wear lipsticks without a base – they can be drying. Apply a hydrating balm or primer underneath.
  • Not drinking enough water – dehydration often shows first on your lips. Keep a water bottle handy throughout the day.
  • Picking at dry skin – it can cause tiny wounds and slow healing.

A few mindful changes can keep your lips healthy and supple all summer.

Natural colour and glow

When your lips are well cared for, they naturally look more vibrant. If you want a touch of colour, try a tinted balm or a light lip oil. They combine care and colour in one – perfect for a fresh, effortless summer look.

Pro tip: keep your lip balm out of direct sunlight or in a cool bag when you’re on the go, so it doesn’t melt in the heat.

Soft lips – all summer long

Summer lip care isn’t about using lots of products – it’s about the right habits. Protect from the sun, hydrate regularly, and avoid drying behaviours. With just a few minutes of care each day, you can enjoy soft, healthy lips all summer long – from the beaches of Northland to the mountain trails of the South Island.
