After a day under the New Zealand sun, your skin can feel warm, tight, and dry – even if you’ve been diligent with sunscreen. Sun, wind, and saltwater all draw moisture from the skin and disturb its natural balance. To keep your skin healthy and comfortable, it’s important to give it some extra care once you’re back indoors. Here’s how to restore hydration and help your skin recover after sun exposure.

Why Skin Dries Out in the Sun

When your skin is exposed to UV rays, moisture evaporates more quickly from the surface layers. Heat and sweat also strip away the skin’s natural oils, which normally act as a barrier against dryness. The result is skin that feels rough, tight, or even flaky.

Even a light tan or mild redness is a sign that your skin has been stressed. That’s why after-sun care should be seen as part of your sun protection routine – not just something you do afterwards.

Cool the Skin – Gently

The first step after sun exposure is to cool your skin down. Take a lukewarm shower rather than a cold one, as icy water can shock the skin and worsen irritation. Avoid soaps or body washes with alcohol or strong fragrance, which can dry the skin further.

Pat your skin dry with a soft towel instead of rubbing. This helps preserve the skin’s natural moisture.

Apply an after-sun lotion or pure aloe vera gel while your skin is still slightly damp. These products help lock in moisture and provide a soothing, cooling effect – perfect after a day at the beach or hiking in the sun.

Rehydrate from the Inside and Outside

Hydration isn’t just about what you put on your skin – it starts from within. After time in the sun, your body loses fluids through sweat, so make sure to drink plenty of water. This helps your skin regain its elasticity and glow.

From the outside, support your skin’s moisture balance with products containing:

  • Hyaluronic acid, which binds water in the skin.
  • Glycerin, to help retain moisture in the upper layers.
  • Panthenol (vitamin B5), known for its calming and repairing properties.
  • Natural oils such as jojoba, sweet almond, or squalane, which restore the skin’s protective barrier.

Apply moisturiser twice a day – morning and evening – and choose a richer formula at night, when your skin’s natural repair processes are most active.

Be Kind to Sensitive Skin

After sun exposure, your skin is more delicate than usual. Avoid products with strong acids, retinol, or alcohol for a few days, as they can irritate and worsen dryness.

If you like to exfoliate, wait until your skin feels normal again. A gentle enzyme exfoliant can be helpful after a few days to remove dead skin cells and allow your moisturiser to absorb more effectively.

Don’t Forget Lips, Hands, and Feet

These areas often get overlooked but need care too. Lips have no oil glands and dry out quickly in the sun – use a nourishing balm with shea butter or beeswax. Hands and feet can also become rough from sand, saltwater, or chlorine, so treat them with a rich cream.

A simple trick: apply a thick layer of cream before bed and slip on cotton gloves or socks. You’ll wake up with noticeably softer skin.

Make Hydration a Habit

Restoring your skin’s moisture balance after sun exposure isn’t just about short-term relief – it’s a habit that protects your skin in the long run. Well-hydrated skin keeps its colour longer, feels smoother, and looks healthier.

So next time you’re enjoying the Kiwi sunshine, remember: good hydration is the key to keeping that summer glow – and to caring for your skin all year round.
