Finding the right skincare products can feel overwhelming. Shelves are packed with cleansers, serums, and moisturisers that all promise glow, hydration, and balance. But what works for one person might not work for another. The key to a healthy, effective skincare routine is knowing your skin type – and choosing products that meet its specific needs. Here’s a guide to help you find the right products for your skin type, with a few tips tailored to New Zealand’s unique climate and lifestyle.

Know your skin type

Before you can choose the right products, you need to know your skin type. Most skincare experts work with five main categories: normal, dry, oily, combination, and sensitive skin.

  • Normal skin feels balanced – not too dry or oily – with small pores and an even tone.
  • Dry skin lacks moisture and can feel tight or rough, often showing fine lines or flakiness.
  • Oily skin produces excess sebum, leading to shine and clogged pores.
  • Combination skin has both dry and oily areas – typically an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, chin) and drier cheeks.
  • Sensitive skin reacts easily to products, temperature changes, or fragrance, and may become red or irritated.

To identify your skin type, cleanse your face and leave it bare for an hour. If it feels tight, it’s likely dry. If it looks shiny, especially in the T-zone, it’s oily. A mix of both suggests combination skin.

Products for dry skin

Dry skin needs moisture and nourishment. Choose gentle cleansers without alcohol or harsh surfactants that strip natural oils. A cream or oil-based cleanser works best.

Follow with a hydrating toner and a serum containing hyaluronic acid to lock in moisture. Finish with a rich moisturiser featuring ingredients like shea butter, ceramides, or glycerin.

New Zealand’s cooler months and strong winds can be tough on dry skin, so consider a thicker night cream or a facial oil during winter to protect against dryness.

Products for oily skin

Oily skin needs balance, not harsh stripping. Over-cleansing can actually make things worse by triggering more oil production.

Opt for a gentle foaming cleanser and a light, oil-free moisturiser. Ingredients like niacinamide and salicylic acid (BHA) help regulate oil and keep pores clear.

A clay mask once a week can absorb excess oil and leave your skin looking fresh and matte – perfect for humid summer days in the North Island.

Products for combination skin

Combination skin requires a bit of strategy. You might need different products for different areas of your face.

A mild gel cleanser is a good starting point. Use a light moisturiser on oily areas and a richer cream on dry patches. A balancing serum with green tea or niacinamide can help even out your skin’s behaviour.

If you live in a region with changing weather – from dry southern air to humid northern conditions – adjust your routine seasonally to keep your skin balanced.

Products for sensitive skin

Sensitive skin needs calm and protection. Avoid products with fragrance, alcohol, or strong acids.

Choose a fragrance-free, gentle cleanser and a soothing moisturiser with ingredients like aloe vera, panthenol, or oat extract. If you use a serum, pick one with minimal, mild ingredients, and always patch-test new products first.

New Zealand’s strong UV rays can easily irritate sensitive skin, so daily sun protection is essential.

Products for normal skin

If you have normal skin, you’re lucky – but that doesn’t mean you can skip skincare. A gentle cleanser, a light moisturiser, and sunscreen are your daily essentials.

You can experiment with serums, masks, or exfoliants, but introduce new products gradually to maintain your skin’s natural balance.

Always wear sun protection

No matter your skin type, sunscreen is the most important product in your routine. New Zealand’s UV levels are among the highest in the world, even on cloudy days. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and apply it every morning – whether you’re heading to the beach, the mountains, or just out for a walk.

Build a routine that lasts

Skincare isn’t just about products – it’s about consistency. Cleanse your skin morning and night, remove makeup thoroughly, and give your skin time to adjust to new products.

Results take time – often several weeks. Be patient, and change only one product at a time so you can see what truly works for you.

Listen to your skin

Your skin changes with the seasons, age, and lifestyle. What worked last year might not be right now. Pay attention to how your skin feels – if it’s tight, shiny, or irritated, it’s time to adjust your routine.

With the right care and a bit of patience, you can achieve healthy, balanced, and glowing skin – no matter your skin type.
